UNDERSTANDING WATCH REPAIR

Types of watch repair

Watch repair covers several different kinds of work. A shop's published service list is the best starting point for determining whether it handles your particular repair.

Battery replacement

Battery replacement involves removing the old battery and installing a suitable replacement in a battery-powered watch. Some watches may also require gasket inspection or replacement and water-resistance testing.

Confirm whether the shop handles your watch type and whether additional testing is included.

Mechanical watch overhaul

An overhaul generally involves disassembling, inspecting, cleaning, lubricating, and reassembling a mechanical movement, followed by adjustment and testing.

The work required depends on the movement, its condition, and the repairer's published service scope.

Crystal replacement

The crystal is the transparent cover protecting a watch dial. Replacement may involve glass, mineral, acrylic, or sapphire crystals, depending on the original watch construction.

Ask whether the repairer can source or fit the correct crystal for your particular model.

Watch restoration

Restoration can involve repairing or preserving older watches, including movement work and attention to worn or damaged components. The scope varies substantially between individual projects.

Ask what work is performed and whether original components can be retained.

BRAND-SPECIFIC SERVICE

Check which watch brands a shop services

Not every independent watch repairer works on every brand. Some shops publish a specific list of brands they service, while others describe their work by movement type or repair category.

WatchFixFinder records brand names only when they appear in the shop's own published information. A brand is never added because it appears in a photograph, customer review, or general description of the business.

Before arranging a repair, confirm that the shop accepts your exact watch brand and model. Also ask about movement availability, replacement components and whether the shop publishes an estimate or inspection process before authorizing work.

Brand names in a shop's listing are not a guarantee of manufacturer authorization. Confirm directly with the repairer whether it can service your particular model and movement.

REPAIR FROM ANYWHERE

Watch repair by mail

Some independent watch repairers explicitly accept watches through the mail. Their published policies determine whether they appear in our mail-in directory.

Before sending a watch, confirm that the repairer accepts your brand, model, and requested service. Ask for current shipping instructions, packaging requirements, insurance arrangements, and return-shipping procedures.

A shop is included in the mail-in directory only when its own published information explicitly confirms acceptance. An unstated policy is not treated as acceptance.
